James Corden sparked backlash following his subtle dig at the Tartan Army
James Corden has found himself on the receiving end of some playful criticism after appearing to make a subtle dig at Scotland fans’ viral Miami anthem during an episode of his World Cup show, After Hours with James Corden.
The Gavin and Stacey actor was discussing a clip that has been widely shared online showing four members of the Tartan Army driving through Florida while belting out a Scotland themed version of Will Smith’s hit song Miami.
Dressed head to toe in Scotland football strips, tartan hats and sunglasses, the supporters enthusiastically sang: “Scotland in the city with the sun cream on, drinking beers on the beach since the break of dawn. Welcome to Miami. Bienvenidos Tartan Army.
“Coming down from Boston with the kilts still on, Brazil are the team that we are taking on. We’re going to Miami, we’re the famous Tartan Army.”

While the footage left Corden and his fellow panellists laughing, the former Late Late Show host couldn’t resist drawing comparisons to his beloved Carpool Karaoke segment, which became one of the most popular features of his American chat show.
Reflecting on the Scots impromptu singalong, Corden joked: “When I look at that I think, ‘yeah it’s not as easy as it looks is it. Singing in a car, you think you know what to do but it’s tough’.”
However, many viewers felt the comedian had managed to turn the spotlight back onto himself, prompting a wave of responses in the comments section poking fun at the TV presenter.
One viewer quipped: “Nah it canny be especially when there’s one take, no auto tuning or a superstar to help you out.” Another appeared to take a swipe at the heavily produced nature of Carpool Karaoke, commenting: “Yeah, but they were driving their car, not like you.”
Others were even less impressed by Corden’s remarks. With a third user stating: “Shock… made it about himself in six seconds.”
A fourth Scottish social media user joked: “James jealous that the Tartan Army are more entertaining in a car than him,” alongside several laughing face emojis. As another jokingly stated: “Think they sound better than big Jamesy boy!”
The light hearted digs continued throughout the segment, with comedian Ian Kamel also joining in the fun by poking fun at the Scots ability to cope with the intense Florida sunshine.
Referencing to the Scots famously fair complexion, he joked: “The sun burns that are about to happen are going to be studied by medical science for the next 100 years.”
The comment left the studio in fits of laughter as Kamel added that the Scottish fans were going to ‘die’ from the Miami heat.
