Compiled by resident engineer/producer Bri Doom, who provides liner notes on the studio history. Neil Crud applauds loudly.

There is something undeniably vital about the physical spaces where underground music gets forged, and few locations carry as much resolute, self-managed weight as The 1 in 12 Club in Bradford. Released on Pyrrhic Defeat Records, Cronyvirus Detector: A Studio 1 in 12 Sampler Vol 1 stands as a sprawling, 21-track tribute to that legacy. Serving as the first installment of a planned three-part alphabetical series, the compilation gathers bands that laid down tracks inside Studio 1 in 12, mapping out the sound of a community built entirely on its own terms.

As detailed by Bri Doom in the release’s sleeve notes, the studio itself was born out of pure DIY ingenuity. What began in the mid-1990s with second-hand gear – Fostex reel-to-reels and digital 8-tracks picked up from Cash Converters – eventually saw the club’s underutilised basement transformed from a dumping ground for scrap wood into a proper, soundproofed recording space. With hands-on construction by club members (including Protag, Stick, and Andy), financial help raised through benefit gigs, and a vital infusion of cash from Chumbawamba, the space was fitted with a 32-channel Soundtrack Topaz console, an Alesis HD24, and Cubase. The result was a haven capable of tracking up to 24 channels simultaneously, offering independent bands a venue to capture raw energy without commercial compromise.

That unfiltered basement atmosphere drips from every corner of Vol 1, which kicks off the alphabetical lineup with a relentless onslaught of crust, d-beat, anarcho-punk, and heavy metallic hardcore.
