That would mark a solid start, though not quite the kind of splash Universal Pictures may have hoped for in a year when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened to $131.7 million and Michael debuted to $92 million.

But the key benchmark here is $47 million. Anything above that would give Spielberg his biggest opening ever outside franchise sequels and remakes, topping Jurassic Park’s 1993 debut. Beyond that, his track record includes Ready Player One with $41.2 million over three days in 2018, Minority Report with $35.6 million in 2002, and Saving Private Ryan with $30.5 million in 1998. His overall career-best remains Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which opened to $100.1 million in 2008.

The film carries a reported $115 million production budget, plus roughly $80 million in marketing, putting its global breakeven point around $300 million. It currently sits at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and stars Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor alongside Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson. Strong Imax demand could push the opening higher than projected, and with Father’s Day falling on its second weekend and little competition ahead, positive word of mouth could give the film real staying power.

Paramount’s Scary Movie is currently projected to finish second with $19 million to $25 million in its sophomore frame, down roughly 55% to 60% from its franchise-record $54.3 million debut. But don’t count out Focus Features’ Obsession, which has displayed unprecedented staying power and could slip past Scary Movie to reclaim second place. The film is eyeing $16 million to $21 million in its fifth weekend and could hit $250 million worldwide by Sunday — an extraordinary showing for a movie made for under $1 million. A24’s Backrooms and Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe should round out the top five with about $10 million to $15 million apiece in their third and second weekends, respectively.

Also opening this weekend, Bleecker Street’s Stop! That! Train! arrives in over 1,000 locations, featuring RuPaul as the president of the United States, with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score. Early projections put the comedy at around $3 million and outside the top five, though strong word of mouth could lift it beyond forecasts.

New releases

Disclosure Day
Director: Steven Spielberg
Distributor: Universal Pictures
If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?
