They seem like real girls, but they also feel like something more abstract. What was your take on it? <\/strong><\/p>\n \n\tMy whole thing was that at the beginning of the song, it\u2019s like we\u2019re all existing and she was just kind of passing by \u2014 and then there\u2019s that moment where she stops us, where we actually touch, and it\u2019s like, \u201cOK, now we\u2019re sort of in this crew together.\u201d It becomes more physical with her. So there\u2019s a nice arc that just kind of happened that way with the storytelling. I think it came from Mitch telling me [that the dancers] just happen to be on the street, as opposed to like whether they\u2019re in her imagination or anything else that\u2019s left up for interpretation.<\/p>\n \n\tWhat struck you\u00a0about\u00a0Olivia as a performer?<\/strong> <\/p>\n \n\tI think she\u2019s very natural \u2014 she\u2019s able to sort of grab your attention and capture you without doing much, and I think that that\u2019s kind of why [the video concept] works, because she just exists, you know what I mean? She doesn\u2019t seem like she\u2019s trying too hard, she\u2019s literally just being<\/em>, and as a dancer, that\u2019s sometimes the most beautiful to watch: somebody just being, as opposed to being too performative. I think that\u2019s why people are so touched by her, in a way.<\/p>\n \n\tDid you have input on the costumes too?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tThey\u00a0definitely wanted\u00a0tutus, and they [initially] wanted flat shoes, and I was like, no \u2014 if\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0doing this,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0wearing pointe shoes.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0easier to be on hard asphalt in a pointe shoe than a soft shoe, but it also gives us the ability to like,\u00a0really\u00a0do<\/em>\u00a0it. And then the costumes, I brought New York City Ballet practice tutus;\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0so much better than the ones you could just buy by the store. <\/p>\n \n\t[Olivia was] adamant that she wanted it to be pink. They had gone to a dance store and bought\u00a0this\u00a0pink tutu, but when I tell you what it looked like when they put it on us \u2026\u00a0I was\u00a0like, \u201cGuys,\u00a0you cannot have us in this video and\u00a0looking\u00a0like models doing\u00a0ballet.\u201d [Laughs<\/em>.]\u00a0I had to get approval to dye [the practice tutus], and an NYCB costume shop lady that I know, Olga,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0like a godsend, dyed our eight white tutus pink so I could make sure we felt authentic.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tWhat was your interaction one-on-one with Olivia like \u2014 was she\u00a0curious about you all as dancers?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tYeah,\u00a0when\u00a0were\u00a0sitting between takes and talking, she wanted to know everything. She\u00a0was like,\u00a0\u201cOh my God, you guys have a show tonight?!\u201d And\u00a0she ended up sending us all a bouquet of flowers to the theater before our night show. It was so nice. And I could just\u00a0tell she was fascinated by the whole ballet world. She was even getting the gossip\u00a0[from us]\u00a0\u2014 like, \u201cThat happens at the ballet?!\u201d\u00a0So that was fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tHas she been to City Ballet before?<\/strong> <\/p>\n \n\tNo, we did invite her, though, and she was like, \u201cI would love that.\u201d\u00a0So now we have to get her to really come to a ballet. <\/p>\n \n\tIs there a chance that\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0all get to perform with her again in some context?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tI\u00a0literally just\u00a0thought about that \u2014 just telling her if it ever works out where she would want us to, just letting her know that we would love to.
