  • Buzzsprout has launched video distribution to Apple Podcasts. The company is charging $30/month for plans that include video (down to $25/month when billed annually); the plan allows up to 6 hours a month of content to be uploaded. The new pricing page also includes a multi-podcast plan; all plans come with transcript generation. Buzzsprout doesn’t, yet, support Spotify video.

The Tech Stuff – with RSS.com

  • John Spurlock’s HLS Podcast Radar – a list of video podcasts available using the alternate enclosure (which Apple doesn’t, yet, support) notes that Flightcast has begun producing a number of video shows using the tag. It means that it only needs one open podcast RSS feed to deliver both audio and video.

    • HLS video podcasting using alternate enclosures are supported by Transistor, Fountain, Disctopia, RSS.com, Flightcast, and PeerTube. Playback is supported by apps like Fountain, Podcast Guru, Podcast Addict and Truefans.

  • The Podcast Index has launched a new API endpoint to allow podcast apps to upload the number of total followers of a feed, to enable better recommendations for all.

  • Livewire reports little movement in the “podcast hosting companies by new episode share” figures for April. The figures don’t include AI slopcasts, described as “text-to-speech” podcasts. The Adswizz tracker and the Podscribe tracker are both on a new record in terms of podcast trackers by total new episodes; and Livewire also publishes a list of podcast CDNs.

  • There has been a significant rise in downloads from web browsers again in April. Buzzsprout report 21.3% of their downloads came from web browsers in the month – up from 13% in March, and up from 8.7% year-on-year. Transistor, similarly, reports 21.4% of their downloads come from web browsers; up from 15.5% last month, and 5.7% a year ago. (AI scrapers often pretend they’re web browsers, which means that they’re difficult to block; and website owners everywhere are battling significant additional traffic).

  • Tips and tricks – with The Podcast Show London

    • One tip for The Podcast Show London – save money on tickets by using our coupon code, PODNEWS10.
    • And, another tip for The Podcast Show London – the best coffee: Redemption Roasters. A third of the company’s staff are former prisoners, being trained with the skills they need to gain secure employment. While the national reoffending rate is 38%, the known reoffending rate of the staff who work there is just 0%. It’s a three minute walk from the venue. There’s a beautiful/weird basement and a garden, too. And the coffee is excellent.
