Many a suit salesman will try to convince you that the four-season suit exists. It does not. Not really. Yes, central heating and air-conditioning have made things more manageable, and sure, you could force a medium-weight wool suit into the heights of summer and the depths of winter, but you won’t have a good time. Besides, even if the mythical all-season suit did exist, rotating your tailoring is a good idea. Suits need a little rest now and then if you expect them to age gracefully.
So, a proper summer suit is the order — something breathable, lightweight, and ideally capable of handling late spring and early autumn as well. Maybe you work in an office that asks for a jacket. Maybe you’re staring down a calendar full of beach weddings and summer events. Either way, linen, cotton, lightweight fresco wool, or some clever blend of the three is where you want to be looking.
With that in mind, here are five summer suits available from the exact tailors we’d point our own groomsmen towards, each spanning various levels of formality and personality, along with the shirts, ties, shoes, and assorted finishing touches needed to pull the whole thing together without breaking a sweat.
J. Mueser Wool Fresco Suit
J. Mueser has quickly developed a devoted following among both menswear obsessives and regular guys who appreciate Italian craftsmanship filtered through a bit of New York POV. While the brand has long specialised in bespoke and made-to-measure tailoring, its ready-to-wear offering has become increasingly strong. The cuts are classic without feeling conservative, and not too skinny or oversized either. Much of that balance comes down to founder Jake Mueser’s excellent eye.
This particular suit, like much of the brand’s tailoring, is made in Naples and cut from lightweight wool fresco — one of summer tailoring’s best fabrics. The high-twist yarns create an open weave that allows heat to escape while also making the fabric remarkably wrinkle-resistant and durable. It also holds shape beautifully, which gives the suit its sharp, clean silhouette even in punishing heat. In other words, it can survive a full day of summer weddings, client meetings, and three martini dinners and coming out the other end looking composed.
