Scotland’s strong start to their historic World Cup campaign was followed by an even more emotional moment off the pitch, as goalkeeper Craig Gordon reunited with his wife Summer Harl and their young family after the Scotland national team’s opening victory.
Steve Clarke’s side secured a memorable win over Haiti in Boston, with John McGinn scoring the only goal of the game in what marked Scotland’s first World Cup victory in 36 years. While fans back home stayed up until the early hours to watch the results unfold, there was a quieter celebrations happening behind the scenes for the Scotland squad and their families.
For Gordon, the match carried significance, with his wife Summer and their two month old baby Archer in the stands to witness his first World Cup appearance.
Summer, who travelled to the United States with their three children – Ace, Axel and newborn Archer – to support her husband during the tournament, had documented the experience on social media sharing glimpses into match day life in Boston.
However it was the post-match moments that captured the most attention, as she posted an emotional image on Instagram of Craig holding baby Archer for the first time after the game.
Alongside the snap, she revealed just how meaningful the reunion was, writing: “And he’s sleeping. Hasn’t seen him for 2 weeks, and that’s 1/4 of his little life.”
The moment reflected the reality of an international football tournament, with Gordon having spent weeks apart from his family while the Scotland squad prepared in camp ahead of the World Cup. Summer had attended the match with Archer and her dad, while their older sons remained at the hotel with their gran due to the late 9pm kick off.
She explained to her followers that the long day made the decision necessary, saying the boys were still adjusting to the time difference after arriving in Boston only days early.
“We ended up getting back around 2:30am so it was definitely the right decision. A 12 hour match day,” Summer explained.
Despite the older boys not attending the game, the next morning Gordon made the most of it and celebrated the victory with his family. He was able to spend time with all three of his sons as they explored Boston together.
Dressed in Scotland kits, Ace and Axel reunited with their goalkeeper dad on a family outing through the city, with pizza and donuts to celebrate the victory and reuniting.
Gordon, 43, who is Scotland’s oldest player in the tournament squad, has often spoken about the importance of family throughout his career. He shares his children with Summer, whom he married in July 2025 after an eight-year relationship.
The pair first met while working at Celtic TV, where Gordon was the club’s goalkeeper and Summer was a presenter, although their relationship began later after she left the role.
Gordon is also father to two daughters, Freya and Emma, from a previous marriage.
