Jesy Nelson has unveiled the heartbreaking moment she was told her twin girls have been diagnosed with SMA
Jesy Nelson has opened up about the gut-wrenching moment her twin girls were diagnosed with the rare genetic condition SMA, breaking down in tears and confessing: “I don’t know how I’m going to do this.”
In harrowing footage, a doctor is heard delivering the news: “The genetic testing came back positive for Spinal Muscular Atrophy” while the devastated star buries her head in her hands, whispering: “I can’t believe this is happening.”
These emotional scenes were captured during filming for her forthcoming documentary, Jesy Nelson: Life Changing.
Prime Video cameras were present to document the former Little Mix star’s raw reaction to the devastating diagnosis as she said she “can’t believe this is happening”.
Medical professionals confirmed the positive test results for the twins. The NHS describes SMA as “a rare genetic condition that can cause muscle weakness”, noting that the condition deteriorates over time.
Jesy has spoken candidly about how her world has been turned upside down, visibly overwhelmed as she says: “I don’t know how I’m going to do this. I feel like I’m going to be heartbroken for the rest of my life,” reports the Mirror.
Yet despite her heartbreak, the determined star refuses to let others shoulder her anguish, vowing instead to fight for changes to legislation and protocols surrounding SMA testing. She has kept her devoted followers updated on her twins’ progress online as her documentary prepares to launch later this month.
In the trailer’s caption, Jesy wrote: “I’m really not sure where to start with this one…All I can say is that I urge everyone to watch this documentary. It’s the most heartbreaking series I’ve ever had to make, but it’s one that needed to be made if we’re ever going to see real change.
“This is only a small glimpse into what my girls have to go through every single day. It’s the reality that so many children born with SMA have to endure and this is only the beginning of their lives.
“I truly hope this helps people understand why the heel prick test and treatment from birth are so incredibly vital. Early diagnosis can change EVERYTHING. I’ll keep saying it until no family has to experience this again: no future babies born with SMA should have lives that look like this.”
She concluded with a heartfelt appeal: “Please if you watch one thing, let it be this: “Jesy Nelson: Life Changing” on @primevideouk, streaming from July 17th.”
The former Little Mix star made her way to Parliament last month as MPs debated universal newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy, joining hands with the Mirror to champion her petition, which garnered over 150,000 signatures calling for all newborns to be tested for the condition.
While Scotland rolled out screening in March, England’s equivalent programme faces a limited launch, leaving Jesy visibly frustrated after public health minister Sharon Hodgson stood by the phased introduction.
Jesy remarked: “I cannot believe we are still debating this. You are basically telling me that if you live in a certain postcode, you’re not as important. It’s outrageous.”
However, the public health minister defended the decision, explaining that restricted testing capacity was hindering a complete nationwide implementation of SMA screening.
The performer emphasised how delayed identification of the condition in her own one year old twins resulted in treatment commencing too late, after permanent nerve damage had occurred. She has subsequently been informed they will never walk.
Jesy Nelson: Life Changing will be shown on Prime Video from July 17
