England beat Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling World Cup match at the Azteca ‘cauldron’ in the early hours of Monday morning, with some famous faces staying up to watch
England’s stunning win against Mexico was celebrated by a host of famous faces at 4am this morning. The Three Lions sent fans back home into a frenzy when they triumphed 3-2 in a nail-biting match at the notorious Azteca ‘cauldron’ in Mexico City.
With pubs open until 5am, the whole country was kept on the edge of their seats. Jude Bellingham was England’s hero as he scored two goald, joined by captain Harry Kane, who scored a second-half penalty.
With kick-off rescheduled by an hour to 2am and after an agonising 90 minutes playing in front of a hostile crowd, including a red card for Jarell Quansah, England saw off Mexico.
When the final whistle blew, visibly emotional England players blasted out Oasis’ Wonderwall in front of the ecstatic fans.
Staying up to watch the game back home, Good Morning Britain host, Susanna Reid, revealed she’d been ‘biting her nails’ in front of the TV. Sharing a snap of herself, looking surprisingly fresh-faced along with co-host, Ed Balls, she wrote: “RESULT! Are you going in or bunking off?! Great to be back in the studio after biting my nails through that last 15 minutes, with @seanfletchertv and @edballs.”
Also watching the epic match was former Football Focus host, Dan Walker. He told fans he’d only had a hour’s sleep, sharing a snap of himself from the Classic FM studio, sporting an England shirt and a huge pair of sunglasses.
He captioned the snap: “Made it to work after 1 hour of sleep. Anyone else on an early start? The music on @classicfm is guiding me through. What a night!!! No shouting please.”
Coleen Rooney was also watching while husband Wayne is in the US on pundit duty. Sharing a bleary-eyed snap of herself and one of her sons trying to stay awake, she shared: “Tired eyes…but worth it!”
Arsenal fan, Piers Morgan, was another celebrity who managed to stay awake for the match. He shared a number of snaps from the game on Instagram, calling the Three Lions heroes.
Captioning a screengrab of Jude Bellingham’s goal, he wrote: “Greatest England performance I have ever seen. Absolute heroes, every one of them.”
However, criticising those who went to bed, he added: “And to all those who went to bed… in the words of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: Big mistake.. HUGE!”
David Beckham also made sure to catch the match. However, already being the US he didn’t have to deal with the 2am start. Sharing screengrabs from the game on Instagram, he praised the players, lauding them as “absolutely brilliant”.
Chicken Shop Date star Amelia Dimoldenberg said she “can’t cope” in a video shared online with the caption “we did it!”, while Jamie Laing said: “It’s coming home baby!”
EastEnders actor Ross Kemp also posted a video on his Instagram account and said: “That is without a doubt the best England performance I think I’ve ever seen. That is without a doubt true English spirit.”
