USA will look to continue their World Cup adventure on home soil when they meet Belgium in the round of 16 in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The co-hosts recorded their first World Cup knockout victory in more than two decades when they breezed past Bosnia & Herzegovina in the previous round last week, despite playing the majority of the second half with 10 men.
Folarin Balogun fired the USA into a first-half lead before seeing red for a late tackle after the break, but has had his suspension controversially overturned.
Belgium staged the most dramatic victory of this World Cup when knocking out Senegal in the round of 32.
The Red Devils were trailing 2-0 with less than five minutes left to play, but quick-fire goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans took the game into extra-time. There was more drama in the final minutes of the additional period as Tielemans was tripped in the box and a penalty was awarded after a lengthy VAR review. The Aston Villa midfielder duly stepped up to fire home.
Portugal or Spain await the winners in the quarter-finals.
