He was a British acting legend who starred in hit BBC show but his death was shrouded in tragedy as his family were reportedly left with nothing after debts wiped out his modest estate
He worked throughout his entire career to establish himself as a big name on the small screen, yet it proved to not be enough when it leaving his loved ones an inheritance.
Despite featuring in an remarkable 11 series of the beloved BBC programme, Dalziel and Pascoe, alongside numerous successful films, including A Clockwork Orange, reports indicate the British acting icon left his relatives with nothing financially following his passing.
Warren Clarke passed away at 67 in his sleep after suffering a brief illness back in 2014, with his demise becoming even more heartbreaking when the extent of his wealth was disclosed.
His estate is understood to have totalled £13,056, already far below what one might anticipate from such a prominent television personality, before being wiped out entirely once outstanding debts were cleared.
Most famous for portraying Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel in the BBC crime series from 1996 right through to 2007, Clarke had travelled quite a journey from his modest roots in Oldham, Lancashire. His profession had thrust him into the limelight, where he soon found himself mixing with some of the celebrated personalities he’d spent years admiring on screen.
Among his most notable performances was his portrayal of Dim in Stanley Kubrick’s legendary film, A Clockwork Orange, in 1971. Though he subsequently appeared in productions such as Red Riding, I.D. , Sleepers and the 2015 series Poldark, amongst others.
Despite his fame spanning several decades, his acting career never quite seemed to yield the financial rewards one might expect, and it’s a topic he was not hesitant to discuss. Throughout his acting tenure, he frequently voiced concerns about the low pay of BBC TV actors, having once detailed his remuneration in an interview.
Clarke said: “In those days, the BBC didn’t pay you until you had done the first studio recording, so I had been working on the show for two months without any money.
“I went to the cashpoint, put my card in the machine, and it spat it out. A few months later, I noticed that my wife wasn’t wearing her engagement ring. I asked her where it was, and she explained it was being repaired.”
The actor shared his life with his wife Michelle, whom he met many years earlier, before they tied the knot in 1987. She was also well-acquainted with the limelight as a performer herself, and together they had a daughter, Georgia, now his youngest child, following his eldest son, Rowan, from his previous marriage.
They remained married until the day Clarke tragically passed away, leaving his wife of nearly 30 years a widow.
Regarding his financial circumstances, the Daily Mail reported a significant portion of his earnings were lost in a failed investment. Clarke had invested in a spy thriller film titled The Numbers Station in 2013, featuring John Cusack, but it turned out to be a box office disappointment.
At the time of his passing, he was still featuring in the popular series Poldark, and an episode depicting his character’s on-screen demise was aired, which had been shot following his unexpected real-life death.
