Spooks star Rupert Penry-Jones is starring in a brand new film that will be available very soon for UK audiences – and Radio Times can now exclusively reveal the first-look trailer and artwork.
Prisoners of Paradise stars Ellie Bamber and Mehdi Dehbi as star-crossed lovers living in Mauritius in 1925, and the trailer gives us an intriguing taste of what’s to come in the sun-drenched drama.
It begins with Penry-Jones’s character George Huyton welcoming his niece Lucy Gladwell (Bamber) to the island – introducing her as “the latest addition to our family’.
Shortly afterwards, we see him telling her than “soon your life will be unrecognisable” before we see some scenes of her seeming to enjoy life in her new home, especially in the company of local labourer Krishna (Dehbi).
But it’s clear that the romantic relationship which is developing between the pair is not approved of by everyone and several scenes of violence follow.
“It is my duty to your mother to set you up for your future,” George tells her at one point, to which she replies: “I serve no man, uncle, I am my own person.”

The official synopsis for the film – which is being distributed by Signature Entertainment – reads: “Love was their greatest rebellion. Set on the enchanting island of Mauritius in 1925, recently orphaned Lucy is sent to live with her charming but controlling uncle.
“When she defies his plans to marry her off for financial gain, she falls deeply in love with Krishna, a handsome local labourer. To be together, Lucy and Krishna must risk everything and defy a world determined to tear them apart.”
The film is directed by Mitch Jenkins (A Million Days, The Show), based on the book Prisoner of Paradise by Romesh Gunsekera and inspired by the lives of Alan and Maria Govinden.

Prisoners of Paradise will be available to own from Monday 10 August in the UK and Tuesday 4 August in the US.
