Shein‘s Executive Chairman, Donald Tang, is set to step down from his role as the fast-fashion giant approaches its highly anticipated public listing, sources familiar with the matter revealed on Monday.

After three years as the company’s primary public representative, Tang will transition into an advisory capacity.

A Chinese-American billionaire with a background in banking, Tang has served as the Western face for Shein’s notoriously private founder, Sky Xu.

His responsibilities included engaging with politicians and regulators globally, alongside representing the e-commerce group at various public forums.

His impending departure raises questions about who will now assume this crucial public-facing role – whether it will be Xu himself, one of his co-founders, or a newly appointed external leader.

Tang, 63, will move into a senior adviser position, continuing to collaborate closely with the management team for the foreseeable future, though no fixed timetable for this transition has been set.

Shein declined to comment on the matter or on who would take over Tang’s duties.

According to one source, Xu, rather than Tang, is expected to lead the investor roadshow ahead of the listing.

Tang, based in Los Angeles, was reportedly introduced to Xu by Neil Shen of HSG (formerly Sequoia Capital China), chosen for his extensive experience managing business relations between China and the United States, as well as his significant connections in finance and politics.

Tang’s initial mandate was to spearhead a New York IPO, which involved extensive lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C.

He proactively addressed growing criticism regarding Shein’s use of the “de minimis” customs duty waiver, publicly advocating for its removal in July 2023.

He also worked to defend Shein’s reputation against allegations from lawmakers concerning potential links to forced labor within its Chinese supply chain – a sensitive issue for Beijing, which denies such abuses.

Following the unsuccessful attempt at a New York listing, Shein shifted its focus to London. During this period, Tang became a familiar presence at The Peninsula hotel near Hyde Park, often accompanied by his teacup Australian Shepherd, Satchi.

However, the London listing also faltered when the China Securities Regulatory Commission withheld its approval, despite the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority giving its green light.

This setback forced the company to pivot once more, this time towards a Hong Kong listing.

Tang had reportedly aimed to establish a legacy of enhanced internal controls to remove illegal products from the marketplace and foster improved relationships with regulatory bodies.

Last year, he initiated an internal drive to bolster regulatory compliance after Shein incurred substantial fines from French and Italian regulators.

Yet, in November, French authorities discovered sex dolls resembling children being sold on Shein’s platform, sparking a national scandal and a government crackdown.

This occurred just as Shein launched its first permanent store in Paris’s BHV department store. A giant poster featuring Tang and Satchi had been unfurled on the BHV building for the launch but was swiftly removed, and Shein’s Parisian retail experiment has since been abandoned.
