Christopher Nolan has praised The Odyssey star Tom Holland.
The director’s new epic, with a runtime of just under three hours, adapts Homer’s nearly 3,000-year-old tale of Odysseus’s dangerous journey home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy, overcoming monsters and deadly obstacles on the way.
It stars Matt Damon as its lead, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous and Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’s son.
Speaking of Holland’s performance in the upcoming feature in an exclusive interview with Radio Times, the Oscar-winning British director called the actor “one of the great new young voices in cinema”.
The Odyssey is the first time the pair have worked together but both have already expressed their desire to collaborate again.
“Tom Holland, who is also amazing, who I’ve not worked with before, but I would love to work with again,” Nolan said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“I mean, he’s just an incredible talent, as everybody else but me knew before I got into it with him. He’s so, so great.”
Nolan had, however, worked before with most of the other major talent in the cast. Both Damon and Hathaway appeared in Nolan’s Interstellar in 2014, while Damon also featured in 2023’s Oppenheimer and Hathaway in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises as Catwoman.
Pattinson had also previously collaborated with Nolan on the science-fiction action film Tenet.
On his choice to cast Hathaway as Penelope, Nolan told Radio Times: “I knew she would be able to do something amazing. I know what she’s capable of.”
Making up the rest of the star-studded cast are Elliot Page, Zendaya, Travis Scott, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, Samantha Morton and Himesh Patel, amongst others.
The Odyssey will be released in UK cinemas on Friday 17 July.
