The upcoming Call of Duty movie adaptation, written by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, will be based on the Modern Warfare entries in the long-running video game franchise.
The information was revealed by the film’s director Peter Berg during a panel discussion at Fanatics Fest in New York on Saturday (18 July), with the filmmaker taking to the stage to announce the news.
While we still don’t have much in the way of exact plot information or specific details about the setting, this means we do now know the film will be set in modern times as opposed to during a historic war.
There have been three games within the revamped Modern Warfare series released so far, with the fourth set to arrive in October this year. These games were themselves soft reboots of Activision’s original Modern Warfare series, beginning in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare — the first time a game in the series had moved away from the original World War II setting.
It was confirmed by Paramount in April that the movie had been dated for a June 2026 release, with Berg saying at the time that he and Sheridan were both “deeply connected to the special ops community”, adding that they were prioritising authenticity for the film.
There has still been no word on any casting news for this film at this stage, but we’ll be keeping our eyes out for any exciting developments on that front.
It was first revealed last October that Sheridan and Berg were working on the film, and plans to make a Call of Duty movie date back as far as 2015 – with a script even having been written before the planned movie was delayed indefinitely in 2020.
Call of Duty is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, with the first game in the series releasing back in 2003. But, it wasn’t until 2007 and the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which brought the action to the present day and made use of new advancements in online multiplayer, that the franchise truly exploded.
