When a family of four are suddenly sealed inside their home with no way out, they have to work together to survive.

Unaware of how long they’ll be trapped inside, the Delgado family make ends meet in every way they can – from hunting animals in their yard to growing vegetables from the floorboards of their home.

But the extreme challenge came when they were faced with sea creatures, the rain that saw the food progressively flood and the very beings that were keeping them trapped inside and the only ones who could open the door.

In the second half of the film, the family are faced with the impossible: avoid the sea creatures while the house floods. Not only will it have audiences hide behind their hands, but it was no easy feat for the actors involved.

In an exclusive interview with Wagner Moura, he told Radio Times: “When I first read the script, I was [like], ‘Oh, this is gonna be fun.’ But it was harder than I believed. We were lucky to shoot the film chronologically. But at some point, I was like, ‘Oh, I wish we had started with the water part of it’.”

“Because back when we shot that it was two weeks prior to the wrap of production. I was so tired already. And those were the most physically demanding scenes, like to have to hold our breath in the water.”

The cast underwent training for the film, with Moura sharing they trained with specialists, survivalists and scuba-diving professionals to help them prepare for filming underwater.

“This was one the most physically demanding things I’ve ever done in my life,” Moura previously told Netflix. “I wasn’t expecting that because you think it’s a film with a family in the house.”

Greta Lee, who plays the Delgado matriarch in The Last House, echoed Moura’s sentiments, admitting that she now has “a totally different relationship with water”.

“We trained extensively with incredible experts, the London School of Diving, we worked on breath holds and equalising popping our ears,” Lee told Radio Times.

She continued: “We had to do stunts underwater while holding our breaths, and it was so incredibly humbling in so many ways. All of that was necessary for the final act of the whole movie.”

As she underwent the training, Lee learned she was a floater rather than a sinker when swimming, meaning she had to have additional weights sewn into her costume to keep her from rising.

“[It was] just another wonderful challenge that I got to enjoy.”
