What are hair-growth products?
“Hair-growth products are products or supplements that assist in maintaining healthy hair and the hair-growth cycle,” says London-based trichologist Hannah Gaboardi. Typically, these come in two different forms: topical and ingestible. According to Helen Reavey, a board-certified trichologist, hairstylist and the cofounder of hair wellness brand Act + Acre, demand for hair supplements has increased due to the growing belief that hair can be supported from within.
Do hair-growth products actually work?
There are a multitude of reasons why you might be experiencing hair loss or hair thinning, whether it’s genetics, problems with your scalp, heat and overstyling, hormones or lifestyle factors such as diet and stress. Which is why getting to the root of the problem is so important. Only then will you know which hair-growth products to go for. It’s important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. In most cases, it will be a combination of things that brings about results. Sometimes it may just be a case of incorporating hair vitamins into your diet, or using the right haircare products. But in other instances, you might need something stronger.
“Hair products and supplements can help support healthy hair, but if you are looking for hair growth, I would suggest looking at medications such as minoxidil and finasteride, or more advanced treatments such as PRP,” says Gaboardi.
What are the key ingredients you should look for in hair-growth products?
Whether you’re looking to prevent or treat signs of hair loss, your first step should be consulting with a trusted dermatologist or trichologist to determine the root cause and create a plan. If the problem is hormonal, they might advise incorporating minoxidil. If it’s due to a vitamin deficiency, they might recommend supplementation and dietary changes.
As a general rule for healthy hair, Gaboardi recommends supplementing your diet with zinc, iron, vitamin C, collagen complex and horsetail, while Dan Hodgdon, founder and CEO of hair wellness brand Vegamour, is partial to clean-plant actives, which are at the heart of Vegamour’s line-up. “I recommend using products that ensure these actives are bioavailable (readily absorbed by the body), and included at effective levels,” he says. Of these, he specifically highlights turmeric, topical caffeine, red clover, mung bean extract and CBD.
