Tyler Duckworth, a two-time champion on MTV‘s The Challenge and Real World: Key West alum, was found dead on Tuesday. He was 44.
Fans knew him first as the funny, big-energy guy from The Real World: Key West in 2006 — MTV cast him not long after he graduated from Tufts, and he barely had time to unpack before the network shipped him straight into The Challenge. He’d stay part of that world for nearly 20 years, cycling through six seasons — The Duel, The Gauntlet III, Cutthroat, Rivals, All Stars 2 and All Stars 3 — and along the way became one of the franchise’s most beloved lifers. He won twice, taking Cutthroat in 2010 and Rivals the following year alongside longtime castmate Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio. Friends called him “Mighty Duckworth,” and it stuck.
Off camera, he found a quieter kind of pride teaching world history in Grand Forks, N.D. In a statement to People, Duckworth’s mother, Joni, said he’d found his passion in teaching and was good at it, adding that she understood his students loved him and that a man who’d traveled the world had plenty of insight to bring into a classroom.
A neighbor in his Grand Forks apartment building reported water pouring through their ceiling on Tuesday; a maintenance worker sent to investigate found Duckworth in an overflowing bathtub. Police say there were no outward signs of trauma and nothing so far points to homicide, though the case was initially classified as an unattended death. A cause of death is still pending autopsy results. Duckworth’s mother confirmed his passing in a Facebook post Thursday, writing that even the family didn’t yet know what happened.
In a statement to People, Challenge star Derrick Kosinski said, “We shared a room on All Stars 2 and he was an amazing human being. His passing is so sad. He was always such a bright light and incredible joy to be around. He also kicked my ass in elimination on the original Cutthroat. And that was after he eliminated Johnny Bananas in the famous Bananas backpack elimination, ‘Back Up Off Me.’ He went toe to toe with CT for 40 minutes! He doesn’t get his flowers often enough for that. And he won that season. And then won again with Johnny on Rivals.”
Duckworth’s final Instagram post, shared Aug. 2 from the Challenge Mania event in Minneapolis, has become the place fans and castmates are now leaving their goodbyes.
The Challenge released an official statement on X, saying they are “heartbroken by the loss.”
Brad Fiorenza, Duckworth’s Cutthroat teammate, said he was heartbroken and grateful for the memories, especially their reunion at Challenge Mania just weeks earlier.
Tina Barta, who crossed paths with Duckworth across two decades of the franchise, called their bond something that became more than a show — it became family.
Katie Cooley remembered him for always making people laugh — and, memorably, for sweating profusely for no reason at all.
Fellow Challenge icon Wes Bergmann praised Duckworth’s on-screen persona and reminded everyone, “Call your friends.”
Johnny “Bananas”, Duckworth’s Rivals partner, kept his tribute brief, posting just a few words on X.
Melinda Collins, a Real World alum and close friend outside the show, shared a string of specific, personal memories — inside jokes about Diet Cokes, a truck, and a favorite Minneapolis bar.
