Six years on from “Megxit”, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shook the United Kingdom with their announcement that they would be stepping down as senior royals and relocating to California, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are bound for Britain once again.
News broke on 19 August that Harry and Meghan will be moving their young family back to the UK from Montecito, with Prince Archie, seven, and his five-year-old sister Princess Lilibet understood to be starting school here in September. It has not been revealed where they will be based, but it is believed to be a location outside of London.
The relocation news comes on the heels of the family’s trip to the UK this summer, their first visit together since 2022. While here, the Sussexes travelled to Althorp estate, the ancestral home of the Spencer family, where Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, grew up. They stayed at the Northamptonshire estate as guests of Harry’s uncle, Charles Spencer, who is set to publish a book about his sister next month. The family’s trip also included a reunion with Harry’s father King Charles and Queen Camilla, who had not seen their grandchildren since 2022, at their Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire.
Prince Harry is not thought to have seen his brother Prince William – who is now based in Windsor with the Princess of Wales and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – since August 2024, when they both attended the funeral of Lord Robert Fellowes in Norfolk.
Though they will reportedly be based in the UK for an “extended period”, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are understood to be retaining their home in Montecito, and they are not expected to resume royal duties, but will remain private citizens. Meghan will continue to run her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from the UK.
