The Lord of the Rings star recalled his favourite TV show while growing up in the 70s which has been dubbed ‘elite Scottish telly’
The Lord of the Ring’s hobbit stars have reunited in a new video to reminisce on their favourite childhood shows growing up.
The famous hobbit quartet, made up of Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Sean Astin (Sam Gamgee), Dominic Monaghan (Merry) and Billy Boyd (Pippin) were spotted together in a new video as they shared some nostalgic TV programmes from their younger years.
Dominic went round the group asking his co-stars about the shows they loved as children and while Elijah and Sean replied with The A-Team and Mork and Mindy, Glasgow-born star Billy Boyd had a very Scottish answer to this question.
When he reached Billy, 58, the actor did not hesitate as he replied: “Glen Michael’s Cavalcade.”
A puzzled Dom replied: “What’s that?” as Billy grinned and said: “A cartoon show in Scotland”
Glen Michael’s Cavalcade was a kid’s television show which aired on STV from 1966 to 1992. The afternoon show featured classic animated cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Asterix, Spider-Man, and Casper the Friendly Ghost.
Glen was also joined on the show by his iconic, talking lamp sidekick called Paladin and his real-life dogs, Rudi and Rusti.
While the late host, Glen Michael, was actually English, he had many ties to Scotland and was also one of the original DJs on Radio Clyde when it first launched in the 1970s.
Billy’s unexpected response saw fellow Scots flock to the comments as one wrote: “Glen Michael’s Cavalcade is the most Scottish answer ever.”
Another agreed: “Glen Michael’s Cavalcade was elite Scottish telly! All of the best cartoons and great chat from Glen and his lamp, Paladin” as someone replied: “Shout out for Rusty the dog too.”
Someone else replied: “Oh wow! Glen Michaels cartoon cavalcade what a blast from the past.”
More Scots shared their memories of seeing the TV show live as children.
One recalled: “Loved Glen Michael’s Cavalcade. He came to Greenock Town Hall with the show. It was the best ever.”
A second added: “I saw Glen Michael at the Glasgow Garden Festival. He arrived in a red Porsche and was wearing a very 1980’s style multicoloured jumper. I was star struck.”
A third fan wrote: “He also came to the Cargill Hall in Bridge of Weir.”
Glen Michael’s Cavalcade ran for 26 years before it was axed in 1992 by STV. Beloved host Glen Michael, who was born Cecil Edward Buckland, passed away last year in July in his South Ayrshire home at 99-years-old.
