Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard was supported as she shared a health update amid her breast cancer battle, as her husband spoke about his wife’s fresh ‘hurdle’
Beverley Callard was supported by her fans as she revealed she has been given doctor’s orders to take it easy after undergoing treatment for cancer, while her husband also opened up about his wife’s fresh “hurdle”.
Former Coronation Street star Beverley, 69, who is best known for playing Rovers landlady Liz McDonald on the ITV soap, revealed in February that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, ahead of her first appearance in Irish soap, Fair City. After bravely sharing her health news publicly, Beverley has been documenting her journey with the disease on social media, which has included undergoing several rounds of radiotherapy.
I’m A Celeb star Beverley has since been waiting for a follow-up appointment to see if the treatment worked as doctors had hoped, but she has still been sharing updates on social media as she reveals the toll the treatment has taken on her body.
Speaking in an Instagram video, Beverley said: “I’ve just come out of the hospital and I saw my surgeon, who is amazing, and my future surgeon because my last surgeon was in England, this one is in Ireland and he’s absolutely lovely.
“They want me to have some more scans and they also want me to see a stomach specialist, a gastroenterologist, because something’s not quite right. And he said, ‘Mind yourself!’ They say that in Ireland!”
She continued: “He said I’m overdoing it, which I know. And he said I’ve got to rest a bit more, which I know. But it’s really hard because I just can’t because if I lay down because I’m tired, my mind tortures…I torture myself. So it’s quite hard. I’m doing okay, I’m not going into the depths of despair or depressed as such. I’m not there at all.
“But it’s just I think, ‘Oh, when will I be better?’ I’m not a very patient person! But I was there with dozens of women who are all going through the same thing and many of them far worse. So, really, I thank my lucky stars. People come up and say hello and ask how Jon how he’s doing, because for partners it’s really hard as well. So that’s it, I’ll keep you updated.”
Beverley was quickly inundated with messages from fans, as she captioned her post: “Back from a weekend in London and straight back into appointments again… A few more tests needed and plenty more rest… doctor’s orders!”
Meanwhile, her husband, Jon McEwan, shared his own update on social media as a way of dealing with what his wife is facing. “We’ve had an update, I suppose. It wasn’t really that good the other day at the hospital,” he shared while on a walk.
“I think we’re waiting for them to say Bev is cancer-free, it’s all done. But every step you take to hopefully getting to the end of it all, there seems to be another hurdle. She’s really suffering from nausea so hopefully they’re addressing that, I read all the messages, and the messages people send to Beverley saying ‘Take it easy, rest’ but it’s not that easy. And with Beverley, she’s got this whole warrior mentality going on.”
He went on to talk about how Beverley struggles to rest and take things easy, despite his pleas for her to slow down, as he admitted: “It’s not easy! Just trying to take it day by day!” while he also wrote: “F*** cancer!” across the clip.
