The Scot described the incident as ‘a shame’
Lorraine Kelly has shared that one celebrity guest previously “stormed off” her daytime TV show. Described as “notoriously difficult”, the Scot revealed the interviewee walked off during the break ahead of their segment on the show.
For over four decades, Lorraine has been a staple of UK television. Having worked her way through the industry, the Glasgow journalist was given her own self-titled show in 2010, where she has gone on to interview thousands of everyday people and celebrities.
However, it hasn’t been all plain sailing for the TV host as she has confessed that one guest stormed off the show and refused to be asked certain questions. Speaking on the Experience Is Everything with Saga podcast, Lorraine described the incident as “a shame”.
Speaking to host Susie Dent, the 66-year-old confessed that British filmmaker Michael Winner walked out of the show many years ago. Most famous for creating 1974’s crime thriller Death Wish starring Charles Brosnon, Winner died in 2013.
While Susie described the filmmaker as “notoriously difficult”, Lorraine added: “Prickly to say the least. He was on and he actually stormed out during the break, which was a shame because nobody got to see him.”
Explaining the incident, Lorraine said: “He was sitting there and he was on talking about some movie that he was doing. It was a long, long time ago and he had just had a triple heart bypass.
“And I happened to say during the break, as you would with anybody who has had a serious illness or something, I said ‘Gosh how you doing? You know, you alright? Have you recovered? Are you still having to take medication?'”
However, it seems Winner wasn’t pleased with the line of questioning as he was said to respond: “I’m not here to talk about my health!”
Lorraine recalled that he then stood up, took his microphone off and “buggered off”. While the Scot confessed that she half thought Winner was being an “eejit”, she did wish he had walked off on air as it would have been quite funny.
Despite this, she did go on to say that the vast majority of the guests she has interviewed on her show have been lovely to talk to, even if they are on to “sell” something.
Lorraine’s interview on the Saga podcast comes as it has been announced that she will be taking over from Susie Dent as the host of the show.
Sharing the news on Instagram yesterday (September 1), Saga UK wrote: “Lorraine has a secret to share with you… We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Lorraine Kelly as the host of Saga’s Experience is Everything podcast!
“Every week, we’ll be sitting down with household names as they share the moments that shape us, with the first episode of the new series out now.”
Many fans of the Scot and the podcast have flooded the comments section with congratulations for Lorraine and their excitement for the upcoming episodes.
One fan wrote: “Yay. I’ll be tuning in.” With another hardly containing their happiness: “That’s smashing marvellous wonderful.” ITV’s Dr Amir Khan also noted that this was “exciting” news.
