Alan Carr has been presented with the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards.
The award was a surprise to the comedian, and he became visibly emotional when he realised it was him who was been referred to on stage. The comic, who triumphed in The Celebrity Traitors earlier in the year, said it only dawned on him when he saw he saw fellow contestant Paloma Faith appear on the NTA stage in a coffin, jokingly adding “I should have realised, they never put me in the front row, I’m always at the back with the people from Naked Attraction“.
Carr, who also stars in ITV1 sitcom Changing Ends, recently appeared in Last One Laughing UK and has several other TV presenting jobs, including Amanda And Alan’s Greek Job. The comic is also joining the judging line-up of the next series of The Masked Singer.
Accepting the award, he said: “It’s amazing. It’s been very surreal and triggering. But thank you.”
The Special Recognition Award is the only category in the National Television Awards not decided by a public vote.
Carr later appeared on stage again to accept the Reality Competition award, which was won by The Celebrity Traitors.

Mrs. Brown’s Boys won in the comedy category. Director Ben Kellett accepted the award, as star Brendan O’Carroll was at home recovering from surgery.
The Comedy shortlist also featured Amandaland, Changing Ends, Last One Laughing UK and Not Going Out.

The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award category was won by Michael McIntyre’s Big Show. The shortlist also featured the comedy programmes The Graham Norton Show and Would I Lie To You?, plus Gladiators and The Masked Singer.
The ceremony, which was held at The O2 Arena, was broadcast on ITV1 and hosted by Joel Dommett.
Amongst the other winners on the night was The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack. The full results across all categories can be seen via nationaltvawards.com
