The decades-long animated showdown continues: the fifth installment of the Shrek franchise is set to be released one year after Toy Story 5 hits theaters.
Shrek 5 will continue the fairy-tale story of Shrek (Mike Myers), the lovable green ogre, and Donkey (Eddie Murphy), his four-legged sidekick, as they embark on a “whirlwind big-city adventure.” All of your favorite characters are set to return, including Gingerbread Man (Conrad Vernon), who gets “caked up like a friggin’ bakery” when he applies gumdrop candies to his badonkadonk.

THE PLOT
The exact plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know that Shrek and Donkey travel together to the big city of Further Further Away where they meet several colorful new characters. From the studio: “Next summer, DreamWorks Animation invites audiences on a thrilling, magical new comedy adventure from one of the most beloved global animated franchises of all time: Shrek 5.”
THE CAST
Myers and Murphy are back as Shrek and Donkey, and they’re reunited with Cameron Diaz as Fiona, Shrek’s ogre wife, and Vernon as Gingerbread Man. Other cast members include Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia, and Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo as Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle. Additional stars will be announced at a later date.
THE TRAILER
On June 16, the first teaser trailer was released with a storybook narrator declaring: “Once upon a time, a hideous ogre and a delusional donkey embarked on a journey to the magical city of Further Further Away.” Donkey is excited for his trip to the big city, while Shrek couldn’t be more annoyed. The video ends with Shrek and co. locked up in jail, as Donkey tries to entertain them by belting out “Roxanne.”
THE RELEASE DATE
The fifth film in the franchise arrives in theaters next summer on June 30, 2027. That’s six months after the original release date of Dec. 23, 2026.
THE CREATIVES
Shrek 5 is co-directed by Conrad Vernon (the voice of Gingerbread Man), Walt Dohrn (the voice of Rumpelstiltskin), and Brad Ableson. Producers include Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri.
AWARDS HISTORY
The original Shrek (2001) won the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and it was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Shrek 2 (2004) earned a pair of bids for Best Animated Feature and Best Song (“Accidentally in Love”). Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010) were both skunked at the Academy Awards.
