Guitarist and singer Sam (Jamie Ward) phenomenally successful first album has provided him with wealth and fame. It’s also giving him the headache of writing a follow up. With the contract signed the pressure is on and mounting.

Finding himself short of inspiration he takes himself to an Italian villa where he spent some of his childhood, where he hopes the atmosphere will stimulate his creative juices.

However as well a writer’s block Sam’s mental state is fragile and when the noises begin at night and footprints appear in the cellar, he’s even more exposed. There’s also the usual record company pressure as well that coming from his own management. His girlfriend Tania (Alana Boden) is there to support him, yet nothing is shifting his muse out of its slumber.

Sam finds an old box that contains a journal with music for the pian. Dating from the 1930’s, the journal was written by a female musician Imma (Giglia Marra) who because of her gender was not allowed to compose at that time. To Sam it’s a revelation as he plays her music, on her old piano. This though triggers events and happenings that test Sam’s nerve to the full.

There is no argument that director Federico Zampaglione, who co-wrote The Nameless Ballad with Barbara Baraldi, has an eye for beauty and composition. The film looks exquisite as he blends the supernatural with the angst that Sam has as he searches for inspiration.

It is however a slow film, and unengagingly so, with no real sense of dread or tension developed. Even as the film reaches its conclusion with revelations and an increase in the spook factor it the film has lost so much traction early on that there’s not much chance of it regaining it.

The Nameless Ballad had its world premiere at Tubi FrightFest London 2026.
