A new BBC Local and BBC Radio York podcast is set to challenge long-held beliefs about the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
Gunpowder and Treason: The Real Guy Fawkes, available on BBC Sounds from Friday 30 October, takes listeners on a three-part journey through the events and legacy of one of Britain’s most infamous conspiracies.
The series, presented by Leeds-born actor Matthew Lewis, best known for his role as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films, investigates whether Guy Fawkes was truly the mastermind or simply a pawn in a wider plot.
Matthew invites listeners to reconsider the traditional narrative, focusing on new evidence, hidden family histories, and the powerful figures who may have operated behind the scenes.
Matthew said: “I’ve always been fascinated by history and felt that I already knew as much as there was to know about the Gunpowder Plot.
“Working on this series I discovered so many new elements, particularly with regard to the Yorkshire roots of the conspiracy. Much of which is still visible in the county today, if you know where to look.”
The podcast explores Yorkshire’s central role, visiting historic locations such as Ripley Castle and the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, and features contributions from Sir Thomas Ingilby, who investigates his family’s connections to the plot, and Tony Beacock, a descendant of plotters John and Christopher Wright.
The series also examines the religious persecution of the time, with a visit to York’s Bar Convent revealing a grizzly tale from the era.
By bringing together historians, descendants, and those with personal ties to the events, the podcast offers a rare opportunity to revisit the Gunpowder Plot from multiple perspectives.
Chris Burns, Head of Local Audio Commissioning, said: “This podcast offers a fresh perspective on one of the most famous events in British history.”
Gunpowder and Treason: The Real Guy Fawkes will be available in the Secret North Yorkshire section on BBC Sounds from 30 October.
